We were so excited for the opportunity to sit down this week with the multi-dimensional Tara Mackey, model, wellness enthusiast, singer, global activist, blogger (The Organic Life Blog) and most recently, author of CURED by NATURE.
Q: What inspired The Organic Life blog?
A: At 24, I came off a series of medications I had been on since I was a kid. I’d taken pills for everything from ADD to fibromyalgia to depression and anxiety. When I decided to come off everything cold turkey, it was a lot like any drug withdrawal. I got sick as a result – and not just because of the toxic stuff I had been putting into my body for so long! It was mostly because of what I had allowed to become a part of my mind that had made me so ill! My life philosophy had lead this destruction in my body more than any drug.
In 2011 I road trippd from NYC to California to make a drastic life change. Within a few months I started writing about my experiences with healthy living, meditation, positive thinking and green beauty, and my blog became The Organic Life.
Q: I love your motto: Be Happy. Stay Weird. Live Well. What is your secret to living a "happy, weird & well" life?
A: I think mindfulness is a huge part of it. Allowing yourself to be happy, allowing yourself to feel weird and allowing yourself to get well. Things that may be normally out of your comfort zone should constantly be embraced. That’s the secret.
Q: Your first book is due out early next year, how exciting! Tell me a little bit about CURED by NATURE and why you decided to write it?
A: Like anything that spirit brings, the book chose me. My publishing company, Skyhorse, found my blog and approached me about writing a book about my life and my expriences coming off of pharmaceutical drugs and getting well naturally. Of course I said yes – it had been a dream of mine to write a book for a long time!
Cured by Nature is my personal story combined with my knowledge and advice to battling personal demons and coming out victorious. The book shows you how to adapt and grow using various herbal remedies, breathing exercises, and mind-strengthening techniques that will help you be a happier and better you. You can grab it on Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com for pre-order. We'll have some awesome gifts available for those who pre-order soon so stay tuned!
Q: I love how open and honest you've been about your own personal wellness journey. What advice would you give to our readers struggling with depression, anxiety and/or substance dependency?
A: Thank you! You've got to want to get well. My first advice is to assess how badly you really WANT to get better. When you become willing to get clean, all the resources that you were always searching for along the way will become available to you. Affirmations are a very powerful tool for this.
Q: What is your favorite part about being a go-to resource for organic living and green beauty?
A: It’s really fun to change people’s lives. To give them a better option than what they’ve been sick of for so long. I also love people, I love working with people and I love watching people transform. It’s so gratifying.
Q: What are your top 3 green beauty must-haves and why?
A: 1. Waxelene - the petroleum jelly alternative. I used to use Vaseline everywhere. I was addicted to it before I realized it was made from crude oil - yuck! Waxelene is all natural and organic, as well as super portable.
2. lottie's body oil from q.c. naturals has been a recent staple. I love the super simple ingredients and it makes my skin so happy. I apply it daily after my shower and add some to my bath water for a totally luxurious experience.
3. Water would be my third. I know it sounds crazy but investing in a good water filter has saved my skin and changed my life! =)
Thanks again, Tara, for chatting with us. If you haven't already, be sure to check out some of her most recent projects (links to follow).
